NCAA and NFHS
In NCAA and NFHS rules, there are two situations in which a five-second violation may occur. Five-second The five-second occurs when a player, while closely guarded, holds the ball for five seconds. A closely guarded situation occurs when a player with the ball in the frontcourt is continuously guarded by an opponent within 6 feet of the player in control. The official continues the five-second count until the player in control gets his/her head and shoulders past the defender or moves to place the defender outside of the 6-foot range. The official's five-second count will reset should the player change from dribbling the ball to holding the ball, or vice-versa (i.e. If the player receives a pass and holds the ball while closely guarded, they will get a five-second count. If the same player starts dribbling on the four-second mark, the official will begin a new five-second count. Again, if the same player stops his/her dribble, it will start the count over again. It is possible for a player to have almost 15 seconds while closely guarded.).
